Pocketing shots with slight amounts of spin becomes nearly risk-free, because it's like aiming a normal shot. ![]() LD shafts make it easier and safer to use sidespin. If you have heavy deflection, every millimeter of tip offset creates a larger change in where the cue ball goes. You want consistency, right? Well, more deflection = less consistency. Some of what you're paying for is appearances and brand name, not an actual improvement in gameplay. Then it boils down to "It's the indian, not the arrow". A finely crafted cue with 1/10,000th of an inch tolerances and beautiful gold inlays won't pocket balls better than a basic factory cue that isn't falling apart. But once you hit a certain minimum level of quality (like around $100) it doesn't matter. Sure, a stick that is literally falling apart and crooked will hold you back. You'll get plenty of advice but, here's what'll actually help your game.*īrandname/quality is basically irrelevant to your playing level. a good used schon, huebler, pechauer, joss, mcdermott, viking or any number of other good brands will put a good quality cue in your hands for an affordable price. Last comment, dont ignore the used market. and if you keep the same pin, you can buy a new butt later and keep an LD shaft. This allows you to buy a basic butt that you like the look of and then go LD later. for example, i have a LD shaft that i can use on either my meucci of my huebler, like wise i have LD shafts that i can use on any of my schons. so what i tend to recommend to new players is to find a used butt that has a common pin that you like the look and feel of, and which is your preferred weight with the shaft that comes with it (i like 18 oz cues and have standardized on the 5/16 14 pin and 5/16 18, then i can buy LD shafts (or any other shafts) for my butts that i can move between them. There is a lot of good information in some of the other comments, but let me just add that imho the butt doesnt add as much feel to the cue as the shaft and tip. it is all a matter of what feels good to you and what you like playing with.Ģ) the cue you like playig with second best ![]() So pool cues dont work that way, there is not a defined list from best to worst.
